Golf Balls
 |
Golf balls have evolved quite a bit from
when they were first introduced back in the 16th
century. Originally crafted from wood, golf balls progressed to being made
of goose
feathers wrapped into a cow or horse hide sphere. These hand-crafted balls
were rather
expensive, so much so that most people could not afford to buy these golf
balls. The next
succession of the golf ball brought about one made from the sap of the
Gutta tree, which,
when heated, could easily be shaped into a sphere. With the advent of
industrialization,
these golf balls became more homogeneous as molds were made, and hence,
they were
more affordable. Shortly after that balls were made from a rubber core
with a Gutta shell
incasing. The modern dimple pattern cam about not long after this, in the
early 20th
century, however it was not until the 1970s that the ball, most similar to
those produced
today, was introduced by Spaulding.
The world of collecting golf artifacts and antique items can be quite
lucrative. Aside from
the sheer enjoyment of being a collector of some rare items, many of the
early balls can
prove to be rather profitable to you. Items of particular interest are
some of the balls that
were produced during the experimentation years when many different
patterns started to
appear on them. The original dimpled Gutties, which is the name given to
balls made
from the Gutta tree, can be sold for upwards of $US 500, this is, if they
are in relatively
good condition.
Today there are loads of manufacturers producing variations of the golf
ball. Aside from
the many brand names generating balls, you can also get your very own
personalized
balls and also signature balls. Among the top manufacturers and brand
names supplying
the golf ball are such prominent names as Nike, Callaway Golf, Top-Flite,
Rainbeau Tour
and
Wilson.
